How it works

Handwriting first. A reply when you rest the pen.

Enchanted Ink is an e-ink journal: you write by hand in a book, and when you rest the pen, an AI model writes a short reply beneath your words. The software works today, running on a reMarkable Paper Pro while the Enchanted Ink device is designed. Here’s how it works.

The exchange, step by step

  1. Open a bookWorking today

Each book has its own voice: the Diary, the Journal, the Storyteller, the Riddle. Any other notebook is just a notebook, and nothing written there is read, sent or answered.

  2. WriteWorking today

Use the stylus the way you would a pen. Nothing needs to be tidy or typed. Your strokes stay on the page, except in the Riddle, where they sink in by design.

  3. Rest the penWorking today

Inside a book there’s no button. Once the pen has rested for about four seconds, the page takes that as your turn to listen, so pausing in a book counts as asking.

  4. Read the replyWorking today

A few words write themselves beneath your entry, stroke by stroke, in a different hand. If your handwriting can’t be read, the reply should say the ink blurred and ask you to write again.

What replies are like

Replies are meant to be curious and brief — usually a single question that helps you take the next step in your own thinking. They should not lecture, flatter, or pretend to know what you didn’t write.

  • Not therapy, diagnosis, or medical, legal or financial advice.
  • Not an emergency service. If you are in danger, contact local emergency services. The prototype doesn’t detect a crisis yet, and its adult books have no content moderation.
  • No streaks, guilt for being away, or messages designed to keep you coming back.
  • No claims of special understanding. It is a tool that responds to what is on the page.

The entries are fictional and the replies were written in advance, so nothing is sent anywhere.

Good to know

  • The device is still being designed. The behaviors marked “Works in the prototype” run on a reMarkable Paper Pro today. None has been validated on Enchanted Ink’s own hardware yet, and every drawing of that device is an illustration.
  • No buttons to press. In a book, resting the pen for a few seconds is how you ask. When you want the page to stay quiet, write in a plain notebook.
  • Memory can’t be reviewed or deleted page by page yet. Each book remembers everything written in it until the whole profile is removed.
  • The animations are scripted. The animated exchanges on this site are scripted. Their handwriting and replies are written in advance, and no AI runs when you press play. The exceptions are the labeled recordings of the prototype.
  • The recordings are real. Each recording is one continuous take of the prototype software on a reMarkable Paper Pro, filmed July 14, 2026. They play in real time unless you choose 2×, and they haven’t been edited; only cropped, turned the right way up and muted.
  • Browser animation isn’t display speed. The handwriting on this site is drawn by your browser. It says nothing about how fast an e-ink panel refreshes or how long a real reply takes.
  • Replies go to an outside AI provider. In the prototype, the tablet itself sends a picture of the page, the book’s instructions and relevant earlier conversation to an AI provider (OpenAI or OpenRouter), and only once remote processing has been switched on; it’s off by default. That provider’s own retention and training rules apply. How our own device will handle this hasn’t been decided.
  • Replies need a connection. Writing works without a connection. Replies don’t: with no connection, or with remote processing switched off, the page says it can’t answer instead.

Working today, and in development

“Working today” means the software does it now, on a reMarkable Paper Pro. “In development” means it’s being built for the Enchanted Ink device. “In design” describes the device itself.

The status of every statement on this site
  • Enchanted Ink is its own e-ink device, designed for handwriting. The drawings on this site are design illustrations, not photographs. In design
  • Today the software runs as a prototype on a reMarkable Paper Pro. reMarkable isn’t involved and doesn’t endorse it, and we aren’t selling software for reMarkable tablets.
  • An e-ink display and a stylus, designed for handwriting. It’s a screen, not paper. In design
  • In a book, an AI model reads a picture of your page and writes a short reply beneath your words, stroke by stroke, in a different hand.Working today
  • Inside a book, a reply begins once the pen has rested for about four seconds. There’s no button to press. The wait can be set to two and a half, four or six seconds.Working today
  • Notebooks that aren’t books stay quiet. Nothing written in them is read, sent or answered.Working today
  • In the Diary, Journal, Storyteller and Tutor books your writing stays where you put it and the reply appears below it. The Riddle book is the exception by design: your words sink into the page, and its answer fades after a few seconds.Working today
  • When handwriting can’t be read, the reply is meant to say the ink blurred and ask you to write it again.Working today
  • On the device, every reply will carry a small AI mark, and each book will say when you open it that its replies are written by AI.In development
  • Each book remembers what’s written in it, encrypted on the tablet, so a reply can pick up the thread weeks later.Working today
  • Planned: choosing which pages a book may remember, reviewing what it has kept, and seeing which earlier page a reply drew on. The prototype can’t do these yet.In development
  • Planned: removing a page from memory so that it, and anything derived from it, is never used again. Backup and provider retention will be explained separately once they are known. In development
  • Replies should also be readable in a clear, non-cursive style at an adjustable size. The prototype has no such setting yet.In development
  • In the prototype, the tablet itself sends a picture of the page, the book’s instructions and relevant earlier conversation to an AI provider (OpenAI or OpenRouter), and only once remote processing has been switched on; it’s off by default. • Writing works without a connection. Replies don’t: with no connection, or with remote processing switched off, the page says it can’t answer instead.
  • The Storyteller book continues a story from what you write and offers you choices.Working today
  • Replies aren’t therapy, diagnosis or emergency help. In the prototype, the adult books have no content moderation and there’s no crisis detection yet.
  • The Tutor book, child profiles and a parent PIN exist in the prototype. They won’t be offered until there’s a verified parental-consent process and an independent safety review.
