The journal

Is this an e-ink device?

Yes. Enchanted Ink is an e-ink journal with a stylus: a screen, not paper, and not a paper notebook with a smart pen. The device is being designed now; its display size and final specifications will be published before preorders open.

The software already works. It runs today as a prototype on a reMarkable Paper Pro, and you can watch unedited recordings of it on the home page.

Do I need a reMarkable tablet?

No, and you can’t buy Enchanted Ink for one. We build and test the software on a reMarkable Paper Pro because it’s an excellent e-ink writing tablet to prototype on, but Enchanted Ink is its own device.

reMarkable isn’t involved and doesn’t endorse this project.

Does it use AI?

Yes. In a book, an AI model reads a picture of your page and writes a short reply beneath your words, stroke by stroke, in a different hand. On the device, every reply will carry a small AI mark, so you always know which words are yours.

Replies are meant to be curious and brief. They are not therapy, diagnosis or emergency help. In the prototype the adult books have no content moderation and there’s no crisis detection yet.

Are the demos real?

The recordings are. Each is a single, unedited take of our software on a reMarkable Paper Pro, shown in real time unless you choose 2×.

The animated pages are scripted illustrations: fictional entries with replies written in advance. Nothing you do on this site is sent to an AI model, and the animations say nothing about how fast an e-ink display responds.

Does it need an internet connection?

For replies, yes. In the prototype, writing works offline, but a reply needs a connection to the AI provider. Without one, the page says it can’t answer rather than pretending.

Can I write without getting a reply?

Yes. Only books answer. Write in any other notebook and nothing is read, sent or answered.

Inside a book there’s no button. A reply starts once the pen has rested for about four seconds, so pausing in a book counts as asking. The wait can be set to two and a half, four or six seconds.

Does it ever write over my words?

No. In the Diary, Journal, Storyteller and Tutor books your writing stays where you put it, and the reply appears below it.

The Riddle book is the one exception, by design: your words sink into the page, an answer appears in the space they leave, and it fades a few seconds later. Choose it only if that’s what you want.

Is it for children?

Not yet. The prototype includes a Tutor book for young learners, with child profiles and a parent PIN. It won’t be offered until there’s a verified parental-consent process and an independent safety review.

Everything else on this site is designed for adults.

Privacy and memory

Where is my handwriting processed?

In the prototype, by an outside AI provider. Once remote processing is switched on (it’s off by default), the tablet sends a picture of the page, the book’s instructions and relevant earlier conversation to OpenAI or OpenRouter, and that provider’s own retention and training rules apply. There’s no separate handwriting-recognition step: the AI model reads the picture.

How Enchanted Ink’s own device will handle this hasn’t been decided. We’ll say so plainly, and name every provider, before anything is sold.

What does it remember?

Each book keeps its own memory, encrypted on the tablet, so a reply can pick up an earlier thread from that book. In the prototype that memory is kept until the whole profile is deleted. You can’t yet review it or remove a single page.

Planned: choosing which pages a book may remember, seeing which page a reply drew on, and deleting memory properly. It won’t claim to know things you haven’t written.

What happens when I join the waitlist?

We store your email address, the boxes you ticked, and the version of the wording you agreed to. We send one email to confirm the address is yours. Release news is the only thing we send unless you also opted into occasional writing notes.

Every email after that includes a way to leave the list.

Price and availability

What does it cost?

The price will be announced when preorders open. Joining the preorder list is free and doesn’t commit you to anything.

Is a subscription required?

Not decided yet. If any feature needs a subscription, it will say so next to the preorder button, before you pay anything.

When does it ship?

When preorders open, the estimated ship window and why we believe it will sit right next to the button. If it slips, you’ll be told, and you can cancel for a full refund.

Join the list and we’ll tell you the moment preorders open.

How do I move up the line?

Share your link. Each friend who joins through it and confirms their address moves you up 25 places, for up to 20 friends. Your link and your place are in the email we send when you confirm.

Your place is real: it comes from when you joined and who joined through you. Nothing else moves it.

How do preorders work?

Preorders open in batches. Invitations go out to the list in line order, with a head start before each batch opens to everyone.

Every invitation shows the price, what’s charged today, the estimated ship window and why we believe it, and the cancellation, delay and return terms, all before you pay.
