A journal that writes back.

Write by hand on e-ink. Pause, and a short reply writes itself beneath your words, in ink.

It's good to hear from you again.

Silent recording. The writer’s words and the reply are transcribed exactly.

Prototype software, notebook build on a reMarkable Paper Pro · recorded July 14, 2026 · cropped and muted, otherwise untouched. The reply starts about four seconds after the last stroke and takes about eight to write.

Ah, my inquisitive visitor. I dwell in this enchanted prison to preserve my thoughts and experiences. It is a sanctuary for my voice, waiting for someone curious like you to engage with the depths of my soul. What draws you to ask such questions?

Paris. You ask your questions neatly, Harry—do you enjoy learning things for yourself? Then: Hello to you, X. That is a curious name, or perhaps only a hidden one—shall I call you something else?

Out of the box

What it does today.

  • Replies in ink

A sentence or two, written stroke by stroke beneath yours.

  • Reads your handwriting

Messy is fine. If it can’t read a word, it asks you to write it again.

  • Keeps the thread

Each book remembers what you’ve written in it, weeks later.

  • Stays quiet on request

Write in a plain notebook and nothing is read, sent or answered.

  • Tells stories with you

The Storyteller turns your sentence into the next chapter.

  • Leaves your words alone

Replies go beneath your writing, never over it, except in the Riddle.

No keyboard, no feed, no notifications. Just a pen and a page that answers.

The object

Your handwriting is the interface.

Write the way you always have. The page does the rest.

An e-ink display and a stylus, designed for handwriting. It’s a screen, not paper.

Design illustration — not a product photograph

Your pace

Not every page needs an answer.

Only books answer. Write anywhere else and the page stays quiet.

Write the same line in

Inside a book, a reply begins once the pen has rested for about four seconds. There’s no button to press. The wait can be set to two and a half, four or six seconds.

Written
Walked the long way home. The river was loud. Not sure what to do with that yet.

Written in a plain notebook (Thursday notes). Nothing is read, sent or answered.

The books

Four books. Four voices.

Open the one that fits the moment. Each keeps its own memory, and every reply is a sentence or two, never an essay.

All four work today. The pages below are fictional examples in each book’s voice.

  • The Diary

Curious, courteous and brief. It wants to know you.

Written: I said yes to too many things this week.

Reply: Which of them would you keep, if you could keep only one?

  • The Journal

Keeps every page. Listens more than it speaks.

Written: Finished the first chapter. Tired and proud at once.

Reply: Both can be true. What will you remember about writing it?

  • The Storyteller

Turns your sentence into the next chapter, then hands you the choice.

Written: The letter was addressed to a house that no longer existed.

Reply: The postman left it at the gate. Do you open it, or follow him?

  • The Riddle

Your words sink into the page. An answer rises in their place, then fades.

Written: I haven't told anyone this yet.

Reply: Then the page will keep it. What makes it hard to say aloud?

In this book, the written words fade into the page, and the reply fades soon after.

Keep a thread

Return to a thought.

Each book remembers what’s written in it, encrypted on the tablet, so a reply can pick up the thread weeks later.

The note showing which page a reply used is coming to the device.

  1. March 3

Starting the hallway bookshelf. Small, just three shelves.

  2. March 17

Long week. Didn't touch the shelf.

  3. April 6

Help me think about the shelf again?

Reply: You wrote about starting this project earlier. What has changed since then?

What it remembers is your choice

A place for your thoughts. With controls you can understand.

Choose which pages a book remembers, see what it kept, and remove any page. We’re building these controls for the device; today’s prototype keeps a book’s memory until its profile is deleted.

Where this runs

In the prototype, the tablet itself sends a picture of the page, the book’s instructions and relevant earlier conversation to an AI provider (OpenAI or OpenRouter), and only once remote processing has been switched on; it’s off by default. That provider’s own retention and training rules apply. How our own device will handle this hasn’t been decided.

Memory setting

Removing a page here means future replies can’t use it or anything drawn from it. How long backups or any outside service keep copies will be stated separately once those systems exist.

How preorders will work

Questions

Straight answers.

All questionsPrivacyProduct facts

Does it use AI?

Yes. In a book, an AI model reads a picture of your page and writes a short reply beneath your words, stroke by stroke, in a different hand. On the device, every reply will carry a small AI mark, so you always know which words are yours.

Replies are meant to be curious and brief. They are not therapy, diagnosis or emergency help. In the prototype the adult books have no content moderation and there’s no crisis detection yet.

Do I need a reMarkable tablet?

No, and you can’t buy Enchanted Ink for one. We build and test the software on a reMarkable Paper Pro because it’s an excellent e-ink writing tablet to prototype on, but Enchanted Ink is its own device.

reMarkable isn’t involved and doesn’t endorse this project.

Where is my handwriting processed?

In the prototype, by an outside AI provider. Once remote processing is switched on (it’s off by default), the tablet sends a picture of the page, the book’s instructions and relevant earlier conversation to OpenAI or OpenRouter, and that provider’s own retention and training rules apply. There’s no separate handwriting-recognition step: the AI model reads the picture.

How Enchanted Ink’s own device will handle this hasn’t been decided. We’ll say so plainly, and name every provider, before anything is sold.

What does it remember?

Each book keeps its own memory, encrypted on the tablet, so a reply can pick up an earlier thread from that book. In the prototype that memory is kept until the whole profile is deleted. You can’t yet review it or remove a single page.

Planned: choosing which pages a book may remember, seeing which page a reply drew on, and deleting memory properly. It won’t claim to know things you haven’t written.

What does it cost?

The price will be announced when preorders open. Joining the preorder list is free and doesn’t commit you to anything.

How do preorders work?

Preorders open in batches. Invitations go out to the list in line order, with a head start before each batch opens to everyone.

Every invitation shows the price, what’s charged today, the estimated ship window and why we believe it, and the cancellation, delay and return terms, all before you pay.

How do I move up the line?

Share your link. Each friend who joins through it and confirms their address moves you up 25 places, for up to 20 friends. Your link and your place are in the email we send when you confirm.

Your place is real: it comes from when you joined and who joined through you. Nothing else moves it.
